Glamour Amid the Clouds

Earlier this year the Folded Wings Association was approaced by David Killick to find a Christchurch ex crew member who would be interested in being interviewed for his column called “ I Remember When”, written for Latitude, a bi-monthly Canterbury Magazine.

Jacqui Wright a long time member and former FWA president stepped up to tell of her flying days. Davids article formed from the interview is below. Well done Jacqui.

Newsletter August 2020

Dear Members,

One more month and we will be welcoming in Spring and hopefully a better time for all of us. Already we can see the first of Spring with daffodils, tulips and erlicheer and blossoms on the trees. Happiness begins at home and a time to reflect on what’s important. Gratitude is a big part of my everyday thoughts and I am grateful that we live in NZ. However for many, life as we knew it has changed forever. The very core of the travel industry has turned upside down and we know it’s very difficult for many.

However there is life AFTER Air New Zealand as many have testified.

We would like to warmly welcome the 57 new members to Folded Wings Association. It is with sadness that we send our condolences to the families of our member Warren

Mudford who passed away 25th June. Warren flew with Air NZ 1976 – 2005. And also to the family of Grahame Durston (QSM), Chief Purser, who passed away 10th July age 92.

It was great to see many of you at our Meet and Greet evening at the Horse and Trap on 18th July. It was a great success and you can view the photos on our website here https://www.foldedwings.co.nz/photos

Due to the current situation, we are unable to go ahead with a social event along with our AGM as we had planned. A new venue and a date change is detailed below. All members welcome.

Folded Wings Association

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

Saturday 19th September 10am morning tea for a 10.30am meeting at

The Pavilion, Phoenix Gardens Apartments, 135 Grafton Road, Grafton, Auckland.

There is coded entry to a limited number of visitor parks within the complex. Text 021 629 747 for entry on arrival. Ample additional metered parking available on Grafton Road and Beckham Place.

Our Vice President, Rebecca will be taking over as President and I will step down to the role of Past President.

Tania is stepping down as Treasurer, although she will offer her services to help the new Treasurer. Robyn is also stepping down as Secretary, and again is happy to remain on the committee to assist the new secretary to settle in.

Please contact us if you would like to be part of the committee and take on the roles as above. We do have a lot of fun and have used Zoom for our committee meetings. We’ve even managed to get Janet on Zoom so at 88 years of age we’re very proud of her technical prowess! We encourage some of our younger members to put their hand up as I’m sure you will have some great ideas! The role of a committee member is to attend 3-4 meetings a year, help increase the membership, and assist with functions. We have 2 functions a year, the mid-winter function and our end of year Christmas Party.

Look forward to seeing you all on Saturday 5th September.

Kind Regards

Maggie

FWA President and all of the committee.

Newsletter May 2020

Dear Members,

Hope you all have fared well under the lockdown.  Our world as we know it has changed forever and with it so many people and businesses have had to pivot the way we do things. I for one thing have had to learn to do virtual bra fittings! Who would have thought that I could continue to offer the same level of service 6 weeks ago by learning how to do that thru Zoom! Love it or hate it technology is incredible to keep many of us connected whether by business or socially.

I have to say I’m looking forward to Level 2 as I’m sure many of you will be as well. However I have enjoyed the peacefulness and connecting to nature, listening to more birds-----and no traffic! Walking 5-7 km most days so I’ll be fit if nothing else! Many have been creative in the kitchen and for many families they have learnt to enjoy each other and do outdoor things together. I’ve seen many families out enjoying their bike rides----let’s hope this positive aspect remains and we continue to enjoy a slower pace of life.

These are tough times for many.  We as a group especially feel for the large number of airline industry staff who have had their careers cut short.  We send them our support and let’s put word out there by mentioning them to any businesses we know of that are looking for staff. If anyone does hear of opportunities post them on Folded Wings Association Facebook page or email foldedwingsnz@gmail.com  If you know of any flight attendants who love fashion and want flexibility tell them to contact me as we are hiring right now.

We have the go ahead to place Folded Wings Ass flyers out at Cabin Services at the airport for those Flight Attendants who are leaving; bearing in mind it will be a bit raw for some right now. We as a committee have decided to offer FREE membership for new members until 30th September 2020. We have updated the website to depict this and encourage you to be pro-active in encouraging new membership and the benefits of socialising at monthly coffee groups, quiz nights and members rates at functions with priority over non-members. Joining form is on our website Home page.

Sadly we lost a life member, Irene Kingwill.  Irene passed away on 29 March aged 91 years.  Irene was one of the early Flight Hostesses on T.E.A.L, flying on the Solent flying boats between Auckland, Sydney and the Coral Route to Tahiti.  She was at the inaugural meeting of Folded Wings Association and became an early secretary and was made a Life Member.  Our thoughts go out to her family.

Many will remember the beautiful blonde Sue Day Nelson  who flew with Air NZ for a number of years and sadly passed away last week age only 69. We pass on our condolences to Deborah and Chelsea and her extended family.

Joy Tongue attended our Christmas Party in November 2019 and in January her health deteriorated and unfortunately she lost her brave battle with cancer and died peacefully age 77 years on 15th January.  Joy was a fun loving and much loved member of Folded Wings Association and will be sadly missed. RIP Joy.

An aviation enthusiast, David Cosgrove, has made contact with us via our website to put a request out to FWA members.  David is a private individual with a strong interest in things aviation. He has an extensive collection of aviation memorabilia including Air NZ and is especially keen on the era of the DC10 and 747 including photos, uniforms, models etc.  David asks:  “Would you have any members who might wish to sell anything of the above please. In terms of uniforms I would like any Isabel Harris, Barbara Lee, Nina Ricci, Thornton Hall and Peppertree uniforms”

Many of us have a passion for the industry as obviously David does. I am sure with our weeks of staying at home many will have sorted through their own memorabilia.  If any members are interested in moving items on please make contact direct to David Cosgrove Mobile 029 9926006, email:  davidcosgrove58@gmail.com

Hope to see a few of you at the North Shore coffee group at King’s Forrest Hill from 10.30am on Thursday 27th of May.. Our city side coffee group will start on Friday 12th of June at our new venue the Ambersand Eatery, Orakei Bay Village, 228 Orakei Road, Remuera. https://www.ampersandeatery.nz/ overlooking the Orakei Basin.

Due to the current climate our Mid-Winter Christmas function is cancelled. The next get together will be the AGM at The Wintergarden, Auckland Domain on Saturday 29th August to be followed by a social gathering.  Add that date to your diary and also save the date for the 2020 Annual FWA Christmas Party Saturday 28 November to be held on the North Shore for a change at the Milford Cruising Club.

Enjoy life at Level 2 and let’s hope we have kicked the Covid- 19 Virus into touch!

Warmest Regards

Maggie

FWA President and all of the committee.

Take care

Dear Members,

I just wanted to reach out to all our members to stay safe and wish you the best of health in the coming weeks of lockdown. Take care of your bodies, hearts and minds over these rather surreal times.

Our coffee mornings are on hold indefinitely, but we can still keep in touch with phone calls or through Folded Wings Association Facebook page.  If you haven't yet joined our Facebook group page, now is a great time to do so.  Just search "Folded Wings Association" and put in a request to join.

If you know of any elderly members in your community make a phone call to them when you’re going for groceries to see if they need anything.   A phone call just for a chat will also be welcome especially for those living on their own.

Take care everyone and we’ll see you on the other side. Keep watching and posting on FB so you feel connected.

Maggie,

FWA President

Newsletter March 2020

Dear Members,

I have been endeavouring to write this newsletter for some time now after we had made enquiries on events and dates we have/had planned and as we all know things have changed on a daily basis.

We appreciate it is challenging times ahead for all of us and as a group connected by our flying careers, now more than ever we need to take care of each other especially for our older members who may not have anyone to do shopping or other errands at this time when they have been advised not to go out.

So at this time we ask you to look out for neighbours, friends and family and the Folded Wings community. Please let us know if you would like help and also if you are available to help others. Committee contact numbers are shown at the base of the newsletter.

We can’t help if we don’t know, so please reach out as this is what our community is about.

We had tentatively made enquiries for a Mid-Winter Christmas Function based on the success of the one we held  last year. The date was going to be Saturday June 27th city side, but that is now not going ahead as we head into uncharted waters.

The next date to mark in your diary is our AGM on Saturday 29th August. At this stage we’re not sure how this will happen and maybe we’ll all have to get more tech savvy and do a virtual meeting!

What we have secured is our end of year Christmas Party, this time on the North Shore at the Milford Cruising Club on Saturday 28th November. This is such a lovely venue for long Summer evenings and we hope that this crisis will be behind us as we move into warmer weather.

Of course EVERYTHING is on hold until we get thru this crisis.

The important thing is for us all to remain calm and diligent about personal hygiene,  go about our daily routine and don’t go out unnecessarily. Continue to connect with each other socially at our coffee mornings----as long as there is social distancing-----a new name for us to get used to.

It has been decided to move the city side coffee mornings to Ampersand Eatery at the new Orakei Bay Village, where there is plenty of parking and the opportunity to shop. It is an all-day eatery offering delicious seasonal dishes in a warm, open, light-filled space.

Here is the website for the Orakei Bay Village for you to see how lovely it is. https://www.obv.co.nz/

Ampersand+Eatery.jpg

Ampersand Eatery, Orakei Bay Village, 228 Orakei Road, Remuera

There is a Farro store and also Kings Plant Barn. The cafe is lovely with views over Orakei Basin and large enough inside to practise “social distancing!”  As the 2nd Friday in April is Good Friday it was decided to meet on the third Thursday 9th APRIL ONLY.  We will ofcourse update this on our FB page as it may need to be cancelled altogether due to the Covid 19 evolving situation.

We are a very caring community and as kiwis we naturally want to help each other. Remember there is plenty of food to go around-----and toilet paper is made in NZ, so we don’t need to stockpile!    In fact I saw a photo with a note attached to the toilet roll shelf that said I quote “ Buy tissues, you get a runny nose not a runny bum!” Anyway I thought that was clever for a laugh.

So in this instance I’m sending you a virtual hug from all of us on the Folded Wings Committee.

Stay safe and be kind to one another----we will get thru this. Remember to not listen to rumours and take advice from the National Health website not all the so called experts out there! If you’re over 70 it has been advised to not go out unnecessarily.

Please reach out for any assistance and contact us if you can help our older members or if you need help.

Warm Regards
Maggie and your committee.

LET’S END WITH A SMILE-THIS PHOTO COLLAGE IS FROM 20 YRS AGO-2000

Newsletter December 2019

Dear Members,

As 2019 draws to a close and we start a new decade it’s always good to reflect on the year that was. Who we’ve lost and new members that have joined us at Folded Wings.

We said goodbye to Bobo (Brian) Olsen and Robin Morton-Smith, RIP.   November 28th was also a day to remember the crew and passengers lost 40 years ago on Mt Erebus.

Many new members have joined Folded Wings in 2019 and we welcome the latest- Kendall Bird-Ritchie, Sue Forgie, Chrissie Menzies, Janet Crickett, Hugh Fenwick and returning members Shirley Neale and Lyn Davis.

Our Christmas function was another great success and here are a couple of photos with more added to our photos area.

Wishing you and your loved ones a very safe and enjoyable Festive Season and we look forward to more fun in 2020.

Kind Regards

Maggie and the Committee.
