Hi Members,
I hope you all made the most of the lovely weather over Labour weekend. We stayed in Auckland and did a drive out to Muriwai on Sunday-----it’s such a wild beach that I haven’t been to in years. We ended up with a late lunch at Hallertau Brewery in Riverhead where we were treated to a small music group playing jazz and old-time music. It was a great day out with our “old” dog Harry who we could take along to lunch as well.
It’s great to get out and about and explore what we have in our own backyard and we are looking to do just that as a Folded Wings event in 2020 so give it some thought and send any ideas to Folded Wings- foldedwingsnz@gmail.com. We would really appreciate your thoughts so that we as your committee give you what you want by way of functions.
We have had 5 new members since our AGM and we give a warm welcome to:
Lynne Abbot, Judith Barr, Angela Coddington, Sandie Corlett and Julie Ellis. We hope to see you at the Christmas Party next month.
A reminder that annual membership renewals are now due and there is a reduced ticket cost for the Christmas Party for current members and their partners.
Membership is still only $20 pa. On the Home page of this website use the “Join us today” tab to advise the date your payment was made and to update any contact details. Please also complete the range of years you flew as we are trying to tidy up our database.

The Quiz night at The Horse and Trap was once again a fun night. We will do another in 2020.
The last function of the year will be our much-anticipated Christmas Party. Based on the success of last year it will be held at the same venue Commodore Lounge, Tamaki Yacht Club on Friday 29th November. Invitation is attached. Please don’t delay with purchasing your tickets as last year we sold out and there is STRICTLY NO DOOR SALES as we must confirm numbers for catering purposes.
We realize that the date is also the day before the 40th anniversary of the Air NZ Erebus disaster. Whilst Folded Wings Association is not organizing any kind of gathering, we will have a minute’s silence at our Christmas party to remember those who lost their lives. Please feel free to post on the Folded Wings Association Facebook Group if anyone wants to organize a get together during the day.
We look forward to seeing you at another fun Christmas Party next month. Hopefully Summer will have arrived by then and the wind has abated, not like last year!

Hi Members,
Well what an August we are experiencing with incessant rain! I hope many of you have managed to get away to somewhere warm-----and dry! Officially only another week until Spring and then daylight saving.
Thank you to those who attended our AGM on Saturday 10th August. Basically there was no changing of the guard and I’m happy to serve another year as President. We said farewell to Jacqui Wright who served 7 years on the committee and Executive committee and is moving to Christchurch this week----we will miss you Jacqui. Also thank you to Lyn Franklin who has given much of her time to the FWA committee over the years. Lyn has stepped down this year. We have 2 younger members elected onto the committee and we welcome Judith Barr and Tracey Scott who will be a great help to Rebecca when she becomes President next year. It’s great to see some younger members put their hand up. We also welcome back Lana Simpson so I know we will have fun planning our functions.

Dear Members,
I’m looking outside my office window as I compose this newsletter and realise that we are over ½ way through Winter and it’s only 4 months till our Christmas Cocktail Party! You would have to agree that we have had a relatively mild Winter with many lovely crisp sunny days and blue skies.
Many of you will have headed or are planning on heading to the Northern Hemisphere to escape the NZ Winter so enjoy the sunshine and travel safe.
We organized another successful function of the Mid Winter Xmas Dinner at the Milford Cruising Club on Saturday 22nd June. Normally Winter is not the best time to organize a function let alone a dinner, however we sold 78 tickets and it was a huge success. A huge thank you to the committee who did a fantastic job and a special thanks to Esther Hensby-Bennett and Ali Clarke for the fabulous table settings----a lot of time and effort went into making the room look festive.

Hi Members,
What a fabulous long hot Summer we’ve had and as we herald in Autumn and the end of daylight saving, your committee have been busy organizing another fabulous event! The Christmas Cocktail party was such a success with lots of new and younger faces that resulted in renewed interest in Folded Wings Association.
The same result with our quiz night last month. New faces there as well. We do have a lot of fun at the Horse and Trap in Mt Eden with the Quiz Master, making wise cracks at us calling us members of the “mile high club!” It certainly tests our brain power-----and we are getting better and didn’t end up last, this time! We will organize another evening later in the year.

Thank you to Haydn who is a member there and as a result we have been given a 20% discount. There’s plenty of parking and is easy to find at Milford Beach. The venue is having major renovations which will be finished by then.
Tickets for current members are $60 per head or $110 per couple

The Buffet will include a choice of 3 meats with all the trimmings plus a huge selection of accompaniments, followed by dessert. Cash bar and tea and coffee available.

Greetings to all our Members,
On behalf of the committee I hope you’ve been enjoying our gorgeous Summer and as we close in on Autumn we look forward to more get togethers. After all, Autumn is a more settled time and we’re certainly not ready to hunker down for Winter just yet!
Reflecting on our Christmas event last November, we had so much positive feedback---that it was the best ever, food was plentiful and the venue was superb! So on the strength of that I have re-booked for this year----Friday 29th November.
There were many new faces and I do believe the power of social media---love it or hate it---has been partly responsible for such a fantastic turn out as well as word of mouth and our new website. www.foldedwings.co.nz
3 long standing members were recognised as Life Members
1) Ann Grieve for her time on the committee as Vice President and President and fundraising in the early years for many charities----one being Bethany for unmarried Mums! Seems weird now doesn’t it that there was a home for such women!
2) Raewyn Lockington- also serving as secretary in the early years. Donating flowers from her Floral Art business in Epsom for various functions. She has been very resourceful in recent times raising money to purchase toiletries for women and girls in need.
3) Nicola Mitchell who has served as Secretary and President more than once. She and her husband Barrie very generously over the years opened up their lovely home for Christmas parties and fundraising functions when we were short on funds. Also ----a worthy recipient and below is a letter from Barrie.

The events of last Friday evening completely overwhelmed Nicola, it was such a wonderful surprise. May I take this opportunity on her behalf to thank you as Lady President and the 2018 Committee for this kind gesture in awarding Nicola Life Membership, I’m sure as much as she can will cherish this award as Folded Wings has and will remain close to her heart.

All 3 ladies received a set of grey leather coasters embossed with the Folded Wings logo and a bouquet of flowers.
Our association have donated $1000 to Look Good Feel Better our chosen charity for this year.
We will continue with our Quiz evenings as they are so much fun and a great way to connect with like-minded members on a casual basis-----we usually are at the bottom so if quizzes are your thing please come along-----we need your expertise!

Dear Members,
Once again I find myself in the role of President of Folded Wings Association. As many of you know this is my 3rd stint as President and this time I know I have big shoes to fill after Jacqui’s time as President. She did an incredible job, especially with the 50th anniversary celebrations, which were a credit to her efficient organizational skills. Like many of us, Jacqui still works and has a very busy social life as well as many trips to Australia to visit her children and grandchildren, so we appreciate the time she gives to Folded Wings.
I’m also thrilled to have Rebecca Gadsdon-Green as my Vice President and being a younger member we trust it will encourage more younger members to join up.
We had our first Committee meeting this week and I’m looking forward to working with our new committee and welcome new members Hadyn Delves, Ross and Ali Clarke, who are first time committee members. I know that Ross and Haydn will bring ideas that will grow our male membership and encourage participation in more casual get togethers for all of us. I also acknowledge Lyn Renner coming back on the committee and with her past experience I know we will continue to grow.
The Quiz night we had in July was such a success we have organized another evening next Tuesday September 18th-----see details below. Reply ASAP. It’s fun, it’s challenging, it’s frustrating, it’s competitive and most of all it’s a very enjoyable evening. So grab “your mates” and make up a table. We do need to register how many so that tables can be booked. No cost to you except a drink and a pub meal if you desire.
There appears to be some confusion with our Face book presence. The FB group for the original Folded Wings Association which was started back in 1967 is shown as “Folded Wings Association” and it is a closed group. Just send us a request to join and it will be answered promptly. There is another NZ based “Folded Wings” group also. We will approach them to look at the possibility of consolidating together. We are also working on creating a website and thank Tania Fernandez for her input on this project. To keep the website current we will require an IT person who would be willing to volunteer their services on a very “part time’ basis. If you know of anyone who could help in that area please contact Tania Fernandez.
Remember our monthly coffee mornings which is a casual and relaxed time to get to know members. Both men and women welcome!
